America hosts 11 venues, with the Final scheduled for MetLife Stadium in New York/New Jersey. Major hubs like Miami, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Houston see heavy airline competition and are typically the lowest-cost US entry points. Trip Planning

Trip-Planning Essentials

Visa & Entry
Visa Waiver Program nationals need an ESTA ($21, apply online at least 72 hours before travel). A B1/B2 visa is required for non-waiver passport holders, and turnaround can take weeks. Apply early — tournament-period demand will be very high.
Stays of up to 180 days are visa-free for most nationalities. A tourist permit (FMM) is issued on arrival, or you can apply online ahead of travel. Attending matches in both Mexico and the US? You'll need separate entry permits for each.
An eTA is required for visa-exempt passports ($7 CAD, online application). Where a full visa is required, submit the application early. Processing is normally quick, though it can stretch during big events. The eTA is bound to the passport you applied with and lasts 5 years.
Currency & Costs
Pay in US Dollars (USD). Credit and debit cards are accepted virtually everywhere. Tipping is the norm: 18-20% in restaurants, $1-2 per drink in bars. Plan on $15-25 per meal at casual restaurants and $8-15 for fast food. In-venue food and drink prices are substantially higher.
The currency is the Mexican Peso (MXN). US dollars are commonly accepted near tourist sites, though peso payments get better rates. 10-15% is the customary tip. Local-restaurant meals run $5-10, which makes Mexico the most affordable host country. ATMs are widely available.
Currency: Canadian Dollar (CAD). Cards are accepted everywhere, contactless included. Tip 15-20% in restaurants. Pricing is roughly on par with the US: $15-25 per meal. Note that price tags in Canada don't bake in tax, so the final bill lands 13-15% above the menu price.
Weather (June-July)
Conditions swing widely by city. In the south — Miami 32°C, Houston 35°C, Dallas 36°C — it's hot and humid. West Coast venues (LA 25°C, San Francisco 18°C, Seattle 22°C) are noticeably milder and drier. On the East Coast (New York 29°C, Philadelphia 30°C, Boston 27°C) it's warm and humid. Plan on sunscreen, a hat, and lots of water at open-air stadiums.
June marks the start of the rainy season. Altitude in Mexico City (2,200m) keeps days moderate at 25°C, with evenings turning markedly cooler. Layered clothing and a rain jacket are essential. Guadalajara and Monterrey run hotter at 30-33°C, and more humid. Afternoon thunderstorms happen often but tend to pass quickly.
The Canadian summer at its finest. Around 26°C is typical for Toronto, with occasional humid stretches. Vancouver's average is about 22°C, with up to 16 hours of daylight and minimal rain. Outdoor events are comfortable in both cities. Bring light layers for evening kickoff times.
Practical Info
Power: Type A/B plugs, 120V. English is the dominant language. Both Uber and Lyft work in all host cities. WiFi is generally free at hotels, cafes, and airports. Grab an eSIM or prepaid SIM on arrival for mobile data. Public transport runs the gamut — strong in New York, weak in Dallas and Houston.
Type A/B outlets, 127V (same as US). Spanish is spoken everywhere though plenty of English is spoken in tourist districts and near the venues. Both Uber and DiDi cover all three host cities. Telcel or AT&T Mexico SIMs at the airport keep data and calls cheap.
Type A/B sockets, 120V (US-compatible). Toronto runs in English; Vancouver in English/French. Uber covers both cities. Public transit works well — TTC in Toronto, SkyTrain in Vancouver, both stadium-connected. Canadian mobile plans run pricey, so an eSIM or prepaid option suits visitors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there direct flights from Athens to the USA?

Yes, two. Delta operates seasonal nonstop Athens to New York JFK from May through October, which aligns perfectly with the tournament window. Emirates flies Athens to Newark daily via Dubai (with same-aircraft connection — technically one-stop but sold as a through flight). For all other US destinations and for Mexico and Canada, you will need a one-stop itinerary through a European or Middle Eastern hub. Delta's ATH-JFK nonstop is typically the cheapest direct option and gives fans direct access to MetLife Stadium — the World Cup Final venue.

When should I book World Cup 2026 flights from Greece?

December 2025 through February 2026 is the cleanest EUR window. Delta's summer ATH-JFK inventory opens in October and the cheapest economy buckets sell out by mid-April. Emirates ATH-EWR peaks in June and July and sees similar early sell-outs. For group-stage matches (11 to 27 June), lock fares by February. For knockout rounds through the 19 July final, January is safer — Greek school holidays and general European summer demand squeeze all connection fares from Greece during that period.

Do Greek citizens need a visa for the USA, Mexico or Canada?

No full visa. For the USA, Greek passport holders qualify for ESTA (USD 21, valid 2 years). Apply at esta.cbp.dhs.gov at least 72 hours before travel. For Canada, apply for eTA (CAD 7, valid 5 years) at canada.ca. For Mexico, no pre-arrival authorisation is needed — a tourist permit is issued on arrival valid up to 180 days. Use only official government sites; many copycat ESTA and eTA sites exist and charge inflated fees for the same authorisation.

Which European hub is best for connecting from Athens?

Lufthansa via Frankfurt or Munich offers the widest US network (10+ direct American destinations) and competitive EUR pricing. KLM via Amsterdam is strong for New York and Atlanta with superior Premium Comfort cabins. British Airways via London Heathrow adds Oneworld network depth with good Los Angeles, San Francisco and Dallas options. For US West Coast and Canadian venues, Turkish via Istanbul and Qatar via Doha are often cheaper than European routings despite the longer journey — their long-haul product is notably better than most European carriers in economy. Aegean is a Star Alliance member, which makes Lufthansa and United partner redemptions accessible via Miles & Bonus.

How do I combine Greek and North American travel on one ticket?

Aegean and its Star Alliance partners make this achievable. Book an open-jaw from Athens to a US host city outbound, return from a different US, Mexican or Canadian city to Athens — often priced similarly to a round trip. For fans wanting to visit Greek islands before or after the tournament, Aegean's summer inventory to Santorini, Rhodes, Mykonos, Crete and Kos lets you extend the trip domestically. Delta's ATH-JFK also allows open-jaw returns from Atlanta, Boston or Detroit at similar pricing, useful if you are attending matches in multiple US host cities.

What happens if there is industrial action at Athens airport?

Greek aviation unions (cabin crew, ground handlers, air traffic controllers) have a history of summer strikes, typically announced 24 to 48 hours in advance. Under EU261, Aegean, Delta, Lufthansa and KLM must rebook you on the next available flight or refund within 7 days. For strikes caused by ATC (ATCO) rather than the airline's own staff, EUR 600 compensation does not apply, but the airline still has a duty of care — meals, hotels and transport during the delay. Keep receipts, file claims promptly, and always have a backup itinerary in mind for peak summer travel dates.

Do I need travel insurance beyond Greek EFKA coverage?

Yes, essential. EFKA (the Greek public health system) and your EHIC card cover nothing in North America, and a US hospital visit can cost EUR 30,000 or more. Buy a tournament-length travel medical policy with at least EUR 300,000 cover (500,000 for USA), trip cancellation, baggage and flight delay coverage. Allianz Ellas, Interamerican and Ergo Hellas all sell Greek-compatible policies from EUR 40 to 140. Confirm USA is explicitly included (some cheaper Greek policies exclude the USA or cap coverage too low) and that medical repatriation by air ambulance is included.
